Solid felt card's edge is firm yet soft enough to be more forgiving for a shrinkage session of the windshield if you were to accidentally crease the film.
Also it skips over any small imperfections and little rock debris that might be underneath the film to prevent from tearing the film.

*Dry shrinking is using liquid farbic softener like Downy (or baby powder, soap, dryer sheet) to prevent the film from sticking to the glass.
